T cell movie: A Jurkat T cell is adhering to a biplanar lipid bilayer coated containing anti-TCR antibodies (red). A stable contact of T cell with the bilayer is shown by the formation of a central signaling zone (called the c-SMAC; red). Superimposed in green is a movie of single molecules ICAM-1 incorporated in the planar bilayer. These molecules are diffusing rapidly in the artificial bilayer but occasionally become trapped at the periphery of the c-SMAC. See section on Vale research projects. Imaging was performed with a Zeiss Axiovert with their laser illumination total internal reflection module and a recorded with a Stanford Photonics intensified camera.
