Wake up in the morning and enjoy a cup of coffee in the dining room overlooking beautiful Eel Pond (or if want a really good latte- take a 3 min walk to Coffee Obsession on Water Street). Attend the 9 am Physiology Course lecture in the historic Lillie Auditorium. We encourage the speakers to not only present results but also speculate on frontiers or problems that they see developing in their research area. At 10:15 am, enjoy your second cup of coffee or juice and have a chance to talk to the seminar speaker in a classroom (no faculty allowed!) and ask additional questions. Then, sit down with your faculty, TAs and 8 fellow students in your research group to get oriented for the days research activities. During the remainder of the day, you will work with faculty, their teaching assistants from their laboratories, and your fellow students on performing experiments or learning a new technique. Each day will be different, as the research problem develops and changes. It is amazing how much fun you will have and see how much you get done. In the afternoon, you may enjoy a break to have a journal club, play softball or soccer, or go to the beach. After dinner, it is back to the laboratory to continue on your research problem. After a hard days work, you can relax or enjoy a beer with fellow students/faculty at the Captain Kidd (the local bar). Saturdays are work days. Sundays are free, and you can explore Cape Cod, Marthas Vineyard or Nantucket. On one Saturday, we have the traditional Physiology Course picnic at Tarpaulin Cove via chartered boat. What is missing? Well, maybe an extra hour of sleep and extra time to do laundry. |
