One of the functions of a Database Management System is to help you manage the data, to make things easier. Filemaker, and most others, allows you to specify input options for the field to do things such as assist in entry validation (only numbers) to actually generating values for you.
We will set the P_ID field to create a unique, sequential datum for each record (table row) we create. We will also check the "Prohibit modificatiojn..." checkbox.
Review the other available options of this feature to familiarize yourself with the possibilities. When you are finished, press OK, to return to the Field Definitions Dialog and then click the Done key.
Clicking "Done" will create a very simple entry form layout for you.
