The Admissions Database - Layouts
Table information is rarely viewed directly. Instead it is formatted through views, or, in Filemaker, "Layouts." There can be any number of layouts for a table and they perform functions such as data entry, printed labels, invoices, and form letters. Field elements can be position and graphical elements added to create custom views.

We will demonstrate this in Filemaker by adding a layout to the Patient database. There is currently one layout. "Layout #1" that was automatically generated by Filemaker when the database was created.

A Filemaker user can be in one of four modes when using the application: Browse, Layout, Find, and Preview. Browse mode is for data entry, sorting, and browsing data. Users can switch between layouts in Browse mode to view the data in different ways.

Layout Mode is for editing and creating Layouts. We will create a new columner layout.

Go to Mode->Layout menu.

    Filemaker switches to Layout mode

Go to Mode-New Layout

    See Figure 2

Name the new layout "Column" and select "Columnar Report" Hit OK.

Select "Move All" to select all fields for the layout. Click OK. Filemaker returns to Layout Mode.

    See Figure 3

The layout and it's parts can be edited. Go to Mode->Browse to view the new layout as a user.

    See Figure 4

Select->View as List will allow multiple records to be view on screen at once.
