The course enrollment is limited to 30 fellows, for which all
travel and course-related expenses are covered by the National Library
of Medicine. The course has been held annually since 1991, and receives
large numbers of applicants each year, so that it is not possible to offer
admission to everyone who applies. Additionally, because the course
is fully supported by U.S. government funding, strong preference is given
to U.S. citizens, although international applicants with compelling circumstances
may also be selected. Applications are accepted beginning in January, and
applicants receive notice of admission by mid-April.

Local Arrangements
The course uses the facilities of the Marine Biological Laboratory,
including the Swope residential facility, a laboratory in the Loeb building,
and lecture room in the MBL Candle House. The residential facilities
of Swope are reminiscent of the a college dorm room - Spartan, but functional.
Each room has a private bath, two beds and a desk. Rooms are double
occupancy: accepted fellows will be assigned one roommate of the
same sex. Towels and soap are provided but wash cloths are not. The
rooms do not have telephones, although there are pay phones available in
the Swope lobby. Internet connectivity for personal e-mail is provided
in the computer lab. Accepted fellows may wish to bring the following:
-
Alarm clock
-
Washcloth
-
Cell phone and charger
Meals are provided at no charge to accepted fellows in the Swope dining
facility, and are served cafeteria style. Additional meals (e.g., for accompanying
family members) may be purchased from the dining facility.
